Winston-Salem Homes for Sale
Before You Move
Have a Yard Sale
Go through all of your belongings room-by-room and set aside any unused, outgrown, or unnecessary items. Consider hosting a yard sale to make some extra money, list a few things online, or simply donate your unneeded items to a local charity, like Habitat for Humanity in Winston-Salem.
Pack One Room at a Time
Start with a room that you don't use often, and pack everything away in sturdy, reinforced boxes. Wherever you collect your boxes from, you'll want to ensure that they're tough enough to withstand some extra weight. If you're already in Winston-Salem, we recommend grabbing supplies from a store like U-Haul or Home Depot!
Label Everything
Make life easier on your future self, and use a labeling or color-coded system to organize everything you've packed. Either label each box with its corresponding room, or assign a color to each room and label your the boxes accordingly. Knowing exactly where everything is will save you a headache when it's time to unpack!
On Moving Day
Create an Essentials Bag
In a large bag or box, carefully pack all the essentials you're going to need right away after you move in. Include things like shampoo, toilet paper, toothbrushes, towels, snacks, medication, chargers, a change of clothes (just in case you), and any other things you use every day. Keep this essentials bag with you at all times. Once you get to Winston-Salem, there'll be plenty of places to stock up, but you might not feel like running out after a long day of moving!
Keep Important Info Handy
Carefully record and keep handy all the important contact information you might need during the move. If you're using a team of movers—like Winston-Salem's All My Sons, Two Men and a Truck, or American Moving and Hauling—make sure you exchange contact information with the movers' foreman in case of emergencies. Double-check that you've stored those important numbers in your cell phone or on a piece of paper—maybe even do both, just in case!
Other Moving Tips
- Stock up on packing supplies at least a month before your big move. You can pick up cardboard boxes from stores around town, but be sure to double-check that they're sturdy enough to handle some extra weight. If not, you may need to reinforce them yourself with packing tape.
- If you have a lot of fragile items, like glass dishes or delicate keepsakes, stock up on bubble wrap for extra padding. If you want to get a little creative and save some plastic, skip the bubble wrap and use spare clothing for padding!
- Pack heavier items in smaller boxes to make them easier to carry. You aren't going to want to haul hundred-pound boxes back and forth if you don't have to! As a rule, try to keep boxes no heavier than 50 pounds each.
- Once moving day arrives, before you put any boxes in your new place, take the chance to do a deep clean. The space is never going to be this empty again, so now's your chance to get into all of the cracks and crevices and clear out any cobwebs.
